Hmalan spent her childhood on the traditional estates of her Tiwi/Iwaidja and Kaytej/Warlpiri families in northern Australia and with her Drehu family in New Caledonia. From a young age Hmalan knew she wanted to support activities focused on the environment and to champion the interests of Indigenous Australians. She is an environmental scientist, graduating with a Bachelor of Science, First Class Honours, from the Australian National University.
Hmalan has extensive academic experience with Indigenous engagement in research, having previously worked at Australia's national science agency CSIRO. She is undertaking the MPP to better assist Australia's involvement of Indigenous peoples and communities in future climate change directives. An extension to this is also ensuring that local knowledges of Indigenous Australians are as recognised and respected as western knowledge systems are.
Hmalan seeks opportunities to mentor emerging Indigenous female STEM professionals.
Hmalan is a Charlie Perkins Chevening scholar.
